Why Your Job Applications Aren't Getting Responses in Finland

1 July 2026 5 min read

You've applied to 40, 60, maybe 80 jobs. The silence is deafening. It's easy to assume the problem is you — your qualifications, your background, your nationality. In most cases, that's not it. The problem is almost always the match between your CV and the job description.

Most CVs never reach a human

The majority of medium and large Finnish companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) — software that automatically filters applications before any recruiter sees them. ATS systems scan for specific keywords from the job posting. If your CV doesn't contain those keywords, it gets filtered out — regardless of how qualified you actually are.

This is why sending the same CV to every job almost never works. Each job posting has its own language, its own priority skills. Your CV needs to speak that language.

The one-CV-fits-all mistake

Think about it from the recruiter's side. They post a job for a "SAP MM Consultant with Procurement experience and vendor master knowledge." They receive 200 applications. Their ATS finds 15 CVs that mention SAP MM, procurement, and vendor master. Those 15 get reviewed. The other 185 — however qualified — don't.

If your CV says "ERP systems experience" instead of "SAP MM" and "supply chain management" instead of "procurement," you've been filtered out — even though you have exactly what they need.

Your CV score matters

Not all sections of a CV carry equal weight. Work experience is typically worth 35% of how recruiters assess a CV. Skills count for 20%. Summary 20%. Education 15%. Contact info 10%.

Most people over-invest in education and under-invest in experience. They write two lines about a job they held for 4 years but write a full paragraph about their degree. Flip that ratio.

The cover letter problem in Finland

Finnish employers often require a cover letter (hakukirje or motivaatiokirje). Unlike in some countries, Finnish cover letters are expected to be concise — one page maximum, often just a few paragraphs. They should answer: why this company, why this role, what specifically can you bring.

A generic cover letter ("I am very interested in this opportunity and believe my skills align with your requirements") is worse than no cover letter. It wastes the recruiter's time and signals low effort.

Response times in Finland

Finnish hiring processes are typically slower than in many other countries. It's not unusual for the process to take 4–8 weeks from application to offer. If you haven't heard back in 2 weeks, a polite follow-up email is completely acceptable and often expected.

What actually works

  • Tailor every CV: Match the language of the job posting in your CV
  • Focus on achievements: Numbers, outcomes, impact — not just duties
  • Use the right keywords: Exact tool names, certification names, process names
  • Apply to fewer, better matches: 10 tailored applications beat 100 generic ones
  • Follow up: A brief, professional email one week after applying shows initiative
